Domain transfer losing a year refers to the loss of renewal years at the original registrar due to transferring the registrar during the "auto-renewal period" in the domain transfer process.
Usually, in order to renew with a new registrar, a domain will be transferred to the new registrar at a certain time before its expiration date, and the expiration date of the domain will also be extended by one year, with the renewal fee for this year collected by the new registrar. However, there is a situation in the transfer process that appears as if the expiration date has not been extended by one year. In fact, if a domain expires, it will not be deleted immediately. The registry will automatically renew the domain on the day after the expiration date. If the registrant does not renew, the registrar must explicitly delete the domain within a certain number of days; otherwise, it will be considered as renewed. This period of days is called the "auto-renewal period".
If you have recently renewed at the original registrar and then applied for a transfer, it is likely that the phenomenon of losing a year will occur. In this case, after encountering the loss of a year, you will need to contact the original registrar (the domain transferor) to apply for a refund of the fees.
